Hi Folks,
With our weather feeling more like September than
July, our crops have enough water, but could use a little
more warmth and sunshine. We are keeping a close eye
on our tomato plants as there is a late blight in the area
which could be very serious and devastating to the plants.
We have already had to plow under our shallots due to
and infestation of downy mildew, so we will not have any
shallots to sell this year.
Dick purchased a larger white delivery van you
may see in your driveway this week. With all of our CSA
and Healthy Box deliveries we were running out of space
in the old one.
Please let us know if you will be attending our
Open House so we can plan activities, food and drinks.
Thanks for your business and support of our local
family farm.

Hi Folks,
Another busy week of food production. We did
receive some much needed rain, so our crops are doing
well. Asparagus is just about over, maybe one more week
of picking for the season. Hopefully within the next couple
of weeks we will be sending you blueberries. Vidalia onions
were not available this week, but we should have
them again next week.
Thanks for your business and support of our local
family farm.

Hi Folks,
Happy Summer, it has finally arrived! This is
prime growing season with the longest days in the
next few weeks. June 21 marked the longest day, so
we are “burning daylight” so to speak. It’s hard to believe
the 4th of July is almost here. That also signals
vacation time, so please remember to use the Holiday
Feature available through your on line accounts if
you want to put your order on hold while you are
away. We have been working on the Grindstone
Farm website and expect to have a new Home Page
up in a couple of weeks with a fresh new look. If you
have a farm account and are participating in the summer
CSA program feel free to order additional items
to be delivered with your share. Just remember to let
us know so we can change your delivery day and location
for you.
The field crews have been busy mulching,
weeding, picking and packing. The weather is in control
right now, so predicting what will be ready a week
ahead of time can be tricky. As always, we will do our
best to fill your orders, but may have to substitute
things occasionally. We haven’t had to irrigate yet,
but without rain it will be inevitable.
Thanks for your business and support of our
local family farm.

Hi Folks,
Our zucchini is still on growth strike, we filled
special orders, but have substituted some beautiful
GSF Green Spinach in our Healthy and Deluxe
Boxes. White button mushrooms did not come in on
our delivery, so we have adjusted your invoices, sorry
for the inconvenience. We were unable to harvest the
Mizuna greens this week but were able to replace
them with Arugula for our Healthy and Deluxe Boxes.
We have beautiful heads of GSF Purple Broccoli for
our CSA Deluxe shares this week. Check out the
website for new fresh cuts of poultry, pork and beef.
This week, you will find Ham Cutlets, Prime Cut TBone
loin steaks and 1/2 chickens are back. Our
meat sells pretty quickly, so get your order in soon.

Hi Folks,
The first week of June and yet another
frost on the farm. The crew was busy on Sunday
afternoon putting blankets of remay over our tender
crops. We are happy to report almost everything
made it through. We have most of our summer
plants in, and will be working on the winter
squashes this weekend. Lettuces will be seeded
on about a 10 day cycle to insure we have lettuce
available all season. Other crops like broccoli,
kales, beans, and chards will continue to be
seeded and planted on their own growing cycles.
We expect asparagus to continue for a few more
weeks, but if you want to freeze or can any, now
would be the time to order it.

Hi Folks,
Just when we thought the last frost was over,
Farmer Dick found ice on the hood of the truck at 3
am Tuesday morning. Having just planted most of the
tomatoes, peppers, and other tender crops, and with
all the winter squash outside the greenhouse there was
a mad scramble to cover at least some of those crops.
We were pretty lucky and most survived. Three frosts
in the past three weeks! We do have some great looking
produce coming from the fields, most of which
like the cool weather. This week, we are planting on
several new areas of the farm. New plantings include
a variety of new young blueberry bushes, and we will
be starting several perennial herb beds in our fields to
serve our members expanding culinary appetites!

Hi Folks,
We survived the frost again and hope this is
the last. The asparagus in your orders this week was
picked fresh on Wednesday morning. With the warm
weekend ahead we expect to be picking twice a day.
Asparagus growth is very dependant on Mother Nature.

Hi Folks,
We survived the frost! Thanks to rolls of remay
placed over our plantings to protect them from
cold weather. Only two more weeks before Memorial
weekend, so hopefully we will be in the clear! We
have been busy seeding, planting and harvesting for
your orders. The greenhouse is booming with every
kind of squash A to Z and more than a dozen varieties
of tomatoes. We got an early start and are hopeful
for a bounty of amazing vegetables and fruit this
season!

Hi Folks,
Wow four items from our farm in your Healthy
Boxes this week, not bad for the first week of May!
Our Bok Choy and Tot Soi grew quickly over the
weekend so we decided to replace the Rainbow
Chard with our own produce. Dick’s crystal ball was
correct and you are also getting the first of our delicious
asparagus and some great looking spinach. It
always puts a smile on our faces when we can grow
our own for our customers. We hope you enjoy, there
is much more to come.
